Somehow I never saw this video though and it’s totally speaking my techie language: “modular” “platform” “ecosystem”. Side note: James Hoffman is really great, isn’t he? I started subscribing to his Patreon when this research journey began because he really stands out amongst all the creators in the YouTube world. Was hoping I’d find some steal on used marketplaces but inventory is low and resell values are high! So I guess there is a modular approach. (Keep in mind I’m also a working pregnant mom so I’m not really sure where I find said time, but all the sudden I decided I have it).īefore seeing this I’d already resigned myself to a $500 entry-level budget (on top of the grinder I already bought). unless I change my thinking and decide that I will continue my daily French press routine and pull out the Neo on the weekend for espresso hobby and learning time. I had originally marked all Flair off my list because the preheating process is just the silliest thing I’ve ever heard of.

But then I watched the video, and my mind is blown. At first I couldn’t believe you were adding another device to my list. I’m not crazy conscious about budget here since I expect to be using these machines for a while and have noticed they hold their value in resell(although maybe this is a covid specific phenomenon), but it’s easy to go crazy in this hobby so I’m basically creating constraints for myself until I meet certain milestones. I missed that it was good for French Press too though. I did look into the Niche (it was like 3 links deep from a wirecutter article and of course alllll over Reddit).

Certainly an upgrade from the spice grinder :) I love the grinder but haven’t really needed to do anything too advanced yet. I was using a spice grinder before so didn’t want to dilly dally on a decision any longer. I followed the James Hoffman French Press brew instructions, and he said people grind French Press too coarse anyway. I live in a VERY open modern home so it was essential to keep noise down. I know I didn’t share :) I figured it might be a distraction. Yes! According to my notes, I went down that rabbit hole in late December and ultimately decided that the auto-frother would add to the shorter learning curve and then I could remove the auto-frother once I want to master that skill. So, Reddit, where has my logic failed? Should I reframe my thinking somehow? It’s been a long road, and ultimately I decided I think the Bambino Plus is the right starter machine for me because of the short learning curve, which I believe will grow my appreciation for the routine of making home espresso, and once I need more fine-grained tuning and control (or the Breville breaks), I will move to the next level of machine. Breville Bambino Plus (wirecutter #1, milk steaming seems easiest and not sure I’m ready for the “control” the other machines provide)

  • Cafelat Roboto (love the look and the idea of manual pressing but it’s still expensive and no milk steamer).
  • #Breville bambino plus espresso machine pro

  • Rancilio Silvia (heard great things, similar category of Gaggia Classic Pro but more expensive).
  • Gaggia Classic Pro (seems like the ideal starter machine but I’m worried I’ll get frustrated quickly).
